After cross wing into New Mexico and staying at the Blue Swallow, we realized that we missed something. Early Friday morning, we left Tucumcari after breakfast and went back towards Texas. Right on the border of Texas and New Mexico is a ghost town named Glenrio. The experience started with driving on Old Route 66 to the town. (It was late the night before, and we took the highway.) Most of the road was dirt and gravel. It also veered away from the highway. You could just see the trucks going by on the highway in certain points. It reminded me a lot of the movie Cars.
The ghost town itself was on a 4-lane portion of 66 with no traffic. We were literally walking all over the street with no fear of cars passing by. Except for one house that seemed to house someone and some barking dogs, the town was deserted. We found out at a rest stop that most of the ghost towns have at least one resident nowadays.
